I find this to be a particularly unique spin on, what i am assuming by the title of said chapter, is a supposed to be a steampunk/gaslamp pony town.

Usually this will transfer into having a Victorian vibe to both clothing and architecture. Here, however, the red brick barn houses and orange roofs, at least in my mind, set this picture apart.

It doesn't feel like a genre was just pasted on top of the MLP universe. Not that I'm against such things of course. Just in this picture the usual motifs were discarded and created something which, in my mind, could actually appear in the show without being jarring. It feels like it took the potential of both themes and used them effectively.

Even the fan on top of the house alone, gives this piece a rural tone to it and the two small buildings with "third-eye" windows make this picture for me. Indeed, the simple wooden pillar holding up the extended part of the house has its magic, because other people would have probably taken the opportunity to "punk it up" with metal furnishings or carvings. There would be a temptation to overdue it.

I haven't read the story, so I don't know where the details the writer provided end and your extrapolations begin. Still, this painting brings a feeling of a farming town winding down at the end of the day. With the red and the orange of the buildings and sky reminding me of autumn and the harvest. Again, contributing the near end theme I see in the picture.

Thank you so much for faving and for such an elaborate analysis :)

You guessed right! :) Shadington is a small town in the province and most of its inhabitants are farmers and lamberjacks or woodworkers.

Me and my boyfriend (author of this fanfiction) were working together on this illustration. There were many discussions about the architecture, building materials, composition and various other elements. According to your analysis it all turned out just fine. We intended that Shadington was a place fitting Equestria and not an attempt to create an alternate, steampunk version of it. The town's architecture was inspired by european workers' settlements - rows of similar, brick buildings.

I'm glad, that you like it and that it seems like I managed to capture the atmosphere the fanfic's author intended for Shadington :)
